Klang —Die 24 Stunden des Tages (Sound—The 24 Hours of the Day) is a cycle of 21 compositions by the celebrated contemporary composer Karlheinz Stockhausen. Intended to consist of 24 chamber-music compositions, each representing one hour of the day and with a different colour systematically assigned to every hour, Stockhausen worked from 2004 until his death in 2007 on the cycle. However, when the composer died, the cycle was not yet finished so that the last three "hours" are lacking. The 21 completed pieces include solos, duos, trios, a septet, and Stockhausen's last entirely electronic composition, "Cosmic Pulses." "Freude," meaning Joy, is the second hour of the cycle and is written for two harps. Its assigned color is blue.
This will be the second time Lilac 94 has worked with director Joseph Drew and Analog Arts. The first was for two performances at Fringe Arts in Philadelphia in April 2018. This production of Klang is a collaboration between Analog Arts and the Société de musique contemporaine du Québec (SMCQ), which was the first organization in Canada to devote itself to the dissemination of contemporary music and to introduce composers from around the world and their works to audiences in Montréal by way of a number of events such as its Série hommage tribute series and the biennial international festival Montréal/Nouvelles Musiques (Montréal/New Music).
